What is an interview, really? Many may see an interview as an unnecessary form of torture, but in actuality, it is an excellent way for organizations to learn about you and, in turn, for you to learn about them. An interview helps both parties determine ‘fit’ and motivation for an offered position.
If the interview is just as much for you as it is for the organization, why the stress? When it comes to interviews, many may not know how to prepare or what the interviewer is looking for, which can lead to insecurity, anxiety, and lack of confidence. Then add in one pandemic shifting interviews online, creating a whole new layer to the interview process; it is understandable there is stress.
To guide you through your next interview here are some tips to help you remove the stress of interviews and increase your success of obtaining your goal—getting the job!
In-Person Interviews (for the few we have)
- Prepare for the interview by researching the company and the position.
- Practice! Prepare yourself for the interview. Know your accomplishments and be ready to give examples.
- Be on time. Arrive or log in no later and no earlier than 10 minutes before the interview.
- Dress for success. Always strive to look professional and polished.
- Have questions ready to ask at the end of the interview. This shows interest and demonstrates that you are a serious candidate that is prepared.
- Always follow up. Send a Thank You email after the interview to all of those that were in the interview. This shows appreciation for the opportunity to discuss the job and can give you a chance to summarize your suitability for the job.
Online Interviews (primary way interviews are being conducted)
- Prepare yourself. It’s important to prepare yourself for an online interview just as you would an in-person interview.
- Be Punctual. Log in to your interview no later or earlier than 10 minutes before the interview.
- Test Your Technology. Always test your technology out BEFORE the day of the interview. Make sure you know how to work everything needed for the interview.
- Check Your Environment. Make sure there are no distractions, noises, etc., before the day of the interview.
- Choose Your Background and appropriate room. If you can choose a virtual background, make sure it is suitable for the interview, nothing that will distract the attention away from you. If you do not have a virtual background, make sure you are in a room that is appropriate to hold an interview. NOT in your bedroom or bathroom. Limit the personal items that are behind you. Try to have a blank wall behind you. Make sure lighting is in front of your face if possible; perhaps get a small table lamp in front of you. Lastly, try to raise the screen you are looking into so it is eye level. This can be done by putting books under your screen to raise it up.
- Speak slowly and clearly. Sometimes there are delays between the two systems, so make sure you allow for that pause.
- Listen Carefully. Increase the volume on your system to ensure you can hear so you can listen effectively.
- Dress for Success. The same practice for in-person interviews, always strive to look professional. And do not be caught off guard, just because you are in the comfort of your own home, make sure you don’t forget your bottoms!!
